SwitchRes patch for Classic
  • Last SwitchRes 2.5.3 posted file will also run in Classic into MacOS X. You cannot benefit of all SwitchRes 2 features (adding new resolutions or icons position won't work, for example), but at least SwitchRes' menu is there in Classic applications too. This patch is unsupported: SwitchRes 2 is not designed to run in Classic, so I won't answer to requests for missing features in this program.

What was new in version 2.5.3?
  • Solved two bugs when reloading preferences at startup and not finding the correct ones after a restart
  • Solved a bug in the Display Sets when applying both Main disp & Display position at the same time

What was new in version 2.5.1?
  • Added SwitchResLib external API: that allows developers to use SwitchRes 2 to access and manage resolutions of the displays. It is more flexible than the Display Manager, because it allows you to use resolutions selected in SwitchRes 2. That means the developer can focus on its program, not on the choice of resolutions that can be presented to the user, since the user already made its choice with SwitchRes 2. The SDK (shared library, header file, and example program) should be downloaded separately.
  • Added a more efficient way to manage Multiple Users: a global option allows the owner of the Macintosh to propagate its own settings to all uses of the Mac.
  • SwitchRes 2 now doesn't test resolutions named "1x1" in SwitchRes Control. This generally crashed the machine in some cases (Powerbook G4 for example).

  • Corrects a bug in the Control Panel: preferences of version 2.4.x were not correctly restored and could crash the Control Panel
  • Corrects a cosmetic bug during drag&drop of Display Sets
  • When testing an aliased resolution, the correct resolution is now tested
  • When creating a new Display Set, the settings used are now the current settings. Also, the Display Set is placed in SwitchRes 2 menu by default.

What was new in version 2.5?
  • Adds the ability to personalize the resolutions name. This is useful if you want to distinguish between lots of similar resolutions, like all the 800x600, 60Hz on a PowerBook (one is for the LCD internal, one for the SVHS output in NTSC, one for the VGA output, and one is simulscan...). You can specify whatever you want as a resolution name, and SwitchRes 2 will use that name in the menus. This is a so useful feature that I don't know why I didn't put it before...
  • In multiple users under MacOS 9.x, the main-user preferences are used if no prefs for this user were found.
  • SwitchRes 2 can now enable/disable its main menu completely (requires a reboot). This option is to solve conflicts with other tools that put their menu in the menu bar.
  • SwitchRes 2 doesn't activate itself under Classic now: sorry, but SwitchRes 2 is not compatible with Classic, at least it doesn't crash Classic any more
  • Changed some internal calculation in the Setup Wizard
  • If you have lots of icons on your desktop created at the same time, then SwitchRes 2 can now correctly replace them
  • Corrects a bug that prevented SwitchRes 2 to show some DDC resolutions on the ATI Radeon cards.
  • Corrects a bug that sometimes prevented SwitchRes 2 to select the correct resolution (example: you choose 800x600, and it selects 640x480...)
  • Really corrected a bug with MacOS 9.1 and the registration window (this was claimed to be solved in 2.4.3, but in fact it was not)
  • Coherency among the user interface was rechecked

What was new in version 2.4.3?
  • Adds the Video Mirroring management in Display Sets
  • Now handles differently the Display Sets that contains settings for more displays than currently attached
  • Corrects a bug that crashed the unregistered version to work on MacOS 9.1
  • Corrects a bug in the Location Manager Module. This module could not work in some cases, and didn't retrieve the correct settings to be applied.
  • Corrects a bug that crashed some games, esp. Civilization 2 and Diablo 2

What was new in version 2.4.2?
  • Corrects a bug on new G4s with Gigabit Ethernet. This bugs appears on Multiprocessor G4s on MacOS 9.0.4, and all G4s under MacOS 9.1
  • Application monitoring is now using an other method when a new app is brought to front and the attached display set should be applied. This method consumes less CPU time.

What was new in version 2.4.1?
  • When an applcation wants a forbidden resolution, SwitchRes 2 tries from now to find a similar allowed resolution, and no more prevents the resolution change. This new behavior corrects some problems with games using DrawSprockets.

  • A problem that occurs when launching some applications (Type 2 errors) is corrected
  • The Control Strip Module is simplified, allowing mode compatibility with GoMac/ExtensionsStrip/etc.
  • A bug in automatic icons saving/replacing has been corrected
  • Icons were replaced and moved horizontally on a Finder grid, even if this option was deactivated in the Control Panel
  • A bug when G3 B&W went out of sleep has been corrected
  • Added the option of saving preferences on new Voodoo5 video cards
  • Option of exporting Voodoo preferences file is only possible on cards that allow it, in mulitmonitor mode

  • User name is filled automatically when registering
  • Corrected a display bug in the resolutions list in the Control Panel
